FIDO, also known as the acronym for “fast identity online,” aims to change how authentication is done online. FIDO login authentication enables password-only login to be replaced with a fast and passwordless login experience across websites and mobile applications.
FIDO2 is known as the overarching term for FIDO’s set of specifications. FIDO2 authentication allows users to leverage standard devices to be easily authenticated to online services in both mobile and desktop environments. With the previous versions of FIDO’s standard for authentication, users were required to enroll every device they logged in from with FIDO as they could not reuse credentials from other devices. The new features for FIDO authentication aim to solve the need to re-enroll on every device of the users.
In one of the latest announcements from FIDO on May 5, they revealed that they had developed a process that offers portability between devices wherein users can log in to their online accounts with their faces, fingerprints, and PIN codes across devices. With Apple, Google, and Microsoft building passwordless support in their online platforms, it appears that users can set up FIDO across multiple devices, provided that the original device is nearby.
However, there are still some shortcomings in FIDO passwordless solutions, such as how they do not verify the identity of the actual account owner. They operate on the assumption that the person holding/registering the device is the account owner. With the help of authID, organizations can move away from device-based authentication to a more secure, cloud-based biometric authentication that is combined with FIDO2 authentication to verify the identity of the user thoroughly.
